OC’S ONLY FULL-SERVICE SKI SHOP

SKI REPAIR & TUNING SERVICES

OC Snowsports has invested in the highest tier of tuning equipment available today. We looked past standard shop robots and chose Wintersteiger technology, the same precision machinery trusted by ski manufacturers and World Cup race teams. This commitment guarantees that every ski we service receives consistent, factory-fresh results with quick delivery and turnaround time.

A properly tuned ski is a safer ski that performs better on the mountain. Tuning not only improves performance but also increases your enjoyment and decreases fatigue.

Our Process

At OC Snowsports, we evaluate every ski that comes in for service and make our honest service recommendations on a case-by-case basis. Our standard “super tune” process includes:

Evaluation: Getting Your Skis Ready

When you bring your skis in, our staff will start by listening to your needs and then perform a thorough inspection. We are trained to check all the critical areas, including:

  • Base flatness and texture (structure).

  • The top sheet for any signs of delamination.

  • The overall camber and the condition of the current tune.

After this evaluation, we’ll clearly explain what services we recommend and walk you through your tuning and repair options. Once you agree, a work order will be written up, and your skis will be scheduled for service with an agreed-upon pickup date.

Technical Appraisal

Before work begins, our certified technician performs a secondary, detailed appraisal of your skis and bindings, reviewing the work order against the actual condition of the equipment. This second set of eyes is our final quality control step to catch any issues the salesperson might have missed. If the technician discovers any new issues or concerns, we will contact you immediately to discuss them before starting the job. Otherwise, work commences as agreed!

Precision Base Flattening

When your skis show signs of wear or warping, their base is no longer flat—a requirement for optimal performance. We restore this foundation with world-class precision on our Wintersteiger stone grinding machine. This automatic, computer-controlled equipment ensures a precise, consistent, and perfectly flat base for every ski. The moment your ski base is flat, we move directly to the next crucial step.

Base Surface Repair

Scratches and gouges on the base signal damage that must be repaired to maintain glide and performance. We take care of any remaining scratches, gouges, and tears after the flattening process. We apply new P-Tex base material to seamlessly fill these scars. This repair is completed with careful hand-finishing using a metal scraper to ensure a perfectly smooth and level surface, ready for the next stage of our Wintersteiger process.

Base Structure

The “base structure” is the fine pattern, or “tread,” on your ski base that controls water displacement and glide. Since the optimal structure depends on snow conditions (e.g., California conditions differ from Utah’s), we don’t guess. We program our Wintersteiger stone grinder to apply a structure specifically optimized for Mammoth/Tahoe ski conditions. This computer-controlled precision ensures peak performance on local slopes. If you are traveling or have specific race requirements, we are happy to program a different structure to accommodate your special requests.

Precision Edge Sharpening

We use our high-tech Wintersteiger automatic edge grinding machine to ensure your edges are perfectly beveled. Skis require precise angles (not 90°) for gliding performance and safety.

  • Base Edge: Set to 0.75° to prevent the ski from catching.
  • Side Edge: Set to  for maximum carving grip.

Our Wintersteiger machine provides a precise, mirror finish that guarantees long edge life and superior safety. Just let us know if you need different angles for special requirements.

Base Treatment: Wintersteiger Waxjet

Your ski base is porous, requiring deep wax saturation for optimal glide. While we still finish by hand, we ensure a perfect application using the Wintersteiger Waxjet machine, a benchmark in professional waxing technology.

The Waxjet precisely and evenly applies high-quality wax to the base, which we then work into the material using a special iron to ensure maximum absorption over approximately ten minutes. After the crucial cooling period, a technician scrapes away surface wax and then uses a high-speed rotating brush to clear the base structure. This leaves a perfectly smooth, consistent, and fast-gliding finish for your next trip.

Final Prep and Storage

The technical work is complete, but our service isn’t finished until your skis look their best! We treat every pair like our own. The technician performs a final detail, which includes cleaning the top sheet, dusting off any remaining wax residue, and securing the skis with a fresh ski tie. Your skis are then carefully hung in our storage area, ready for you to pick up and hit the slopes.

Skis Ready

We look forward to sending you off with perfectly tuned skis. Your salesperson will greet you, present your equipment, and briefly show you the work performed, including specific technical details from our shop notes. If you have any last-minute questions, we’re happy to answer them! Otherwise, you’ll be on your way, ready to experience the difference a professional tune makes.

Tuning & Repair Services Info

    • All shop work typically has a 2-3 day turnaround time.

    • OC Snowsports is an Indemnified Shop. Which means: Ski binding indemnification lists are compiled by the National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association to determine which models will be covered under the manufacturer’s liability. If we are not certified for a particular manufacturer, or if the ski or binding in question is no longer indemnified by the manufacturer, we will not be able to service the equipment.

    • Our tuning and repair services are done on a first-come-first-served basis, with a standard turnaround time of 2-3 days. If you need your equipment serviced sooner, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Came to rent skis/boots/poles for my 12yr old son during Xmas, and was very impressed with the quality of their rental equipment. I don’t think the Volkl Revolt skis we rented had been skied on yet, the bases and edges were in perfect condition. Service was personable and would definitely go back. We did end up going back during President’s weekend to look at rental equipment, and this time ended up buying some Volkl Mantra Jr skis w/ Marker bindings which were a great fit for my son. Thank you Darryl for keeping OC (and beyond : ) well equipped for the snow!

Probably the best place to buy ski equipment in Southern California. I went to REI in San Diego and they had almost nothing in stock. Went to OC Snowsports and they had a huge selection of everything. Darryl, Ron and Nick were awesome and Ron even stayed long after closing working to heat size my boots to perfection. My son damaged his new skis first day out and they even fixed them for free. Go for the selection and amazing customer service.

LOVE this place. Great selection, super knowledgeable staff, and just an all-around 5-star experience. I drove up from San Diego and was it ever worth it. After an information-filled, zero pressure, 2-hour boot fitting session (due to trying on and heating several boots), I was thrilled to buy a pair of ski boots that I knew were the best fit for both my foot as well as my ski style and ability. Can’t say enough great things about this place. If you are serious about getting top-notch advice, the best service in OC, and peace of mind about your purchase, this is absolutely the place to go.
